Scholarship Program

Every youth who wants to study high school and university receives a scholarship from donors. Teosinte's school goes up through ninth grade. Those who wish to study beyond this must leave Teosinte and go to other communities to study. This year it cost $18,600. Next year, it will increase as more students enter high school and as those graduating from high school enter university. Each students signs a scholarship contract that stipulates that s/he must maintain a 7.0 grade average on a 10-point scale and give 150 hours/year of service to Teosinte to maintain her/his scholarship. If the grade average falls below 7.0, then they must study without scholarship for a term, then send their grades. If they have achieved a 7.0 average, then their scholarship is returned to them. This is a costly project, but also the one that has improved Teosinte's performance on the indices of poverty the most.
