Larry Winiarski of Corvallis is the engineer who developed the rocket stove 20 years ago. This stove burns very hot because it is so energy-efficient. It uses twigs instead of large pieces of wood, and saves 2000 pounds of wood per year and also emits much less smoke. The hardest problem, however, has been finding a material to make the combustion chamber out of that will last and can be affordably replaced by poor families. Ken Goyer, WEP vice president, designed this material--specially shaped bricks that are very light weight, made of straw, mud, water and a small amount of cement. So far, Ken has distributed one of these stoves to every family in Teosinte. He is in the process of providing a second stove for tortillas. The most Common cause of blindness in Third World women is a lifelong exposure to cook stove smoke. And, given the disastrous consequences of deforestation and global warming, we feel this project is of the utmost importance. Cost: $5,000 per year.
